Track & Field is now in the second week of training. Many students from Year 5 – 12 have been invited into the squad based on performances at this year’s Inter-House Track and Field Carnival. During this time of year, we realise that many boys will have a lot on their plate with regards to tennis, rugby league, basketball plus possible club commitments.
I must say the attendance at Track & Field training last week was good from our Year 5 – 8 students, unfortunately attendance from our older boys has been very poor. Villanova needs the support of the parent body to back the coaches and Sports Office to ensure that those who are invited into the Track & Field squad do attend and train. We cannot have a situation where Villa’s best are not prepared to be involved and represent the College when asked. We would expect those who have been selected in the 2022/23 Ben Mowen and Andrew Slack squads as well as those who aspire to be in the junior football and senior football development squads to be more than willing to participate if they have been named in the squad. The same applies for those wishing to be members of the cubs, sabres and wildcats basketball squads and cricket emerging talent squads.
Please understand that if a student is unwilling to involve himself when asked to join the Track and Field squad, he will not be considered, or his name will be withdrawn from any development squad. These squads always remain a privilege not a right for our students. The selection is very much a reward for not only their ability given to the respective sport in question but also for their willingness to give of themselves to the College when asked. As always, the Sports Office is willing to negotiate alternative/specialised training schedules for those who do have a lot on their plate. Students must contact the coach or Sports Office to sort through a schedule which is workable. Students who continue to hide and promise the world to their coaches and not turn up simply let the College down.
I make no apologies for setting the bar high for Villanova College students. In our AIC sports competition, premierships are up for grabs, and I would hope that our boys are keen and eager to contest them. I believe our boys have been well prepared and organised throughout the current trimester of sport season. As a result, Villanova is in with a real chance to do very well this trimester if we continue to work hard and play well as a team. There is no pressure on any student or any team to win. The only expectation we have is that our boys give 100% at training and on game day and that they conduct themselves as Christian men both on and off the court each week. Maintaining and building school pride and a positive culture is important to us. I ask all students to continue do their part this trimester of sport for Villa to perform at its best.
Our basketball is going very well so far this season. This weekend will see many ‘top of the table’ clashes against St Laurence’s across Year 5 – 12. Premierships are on the line. I ask all boys to keep up the good work and to back themselves this weekend.
Our tennis performances across the year levels and general conduct have been pleasing. I am expecting another solid round from all tennis players this weekend against St Laurence’s.
Overall, we had an excellent round of results against St Patricks last weekend in rugby league. We are expecting our boys to do very well this weekend against St Laurence’s and next weekend against St Edmund’s too. Best wishes to all rugby league players!
Best wishes go to all AIC teams this week as we take on St Laurence’s College in the local derby. They will be ready for battle and so will we. Best wishes to all and go for it boys!

AIC Track and Field
Many thanks to the many boys and their parents for supporting the Track and Field program so far by attending the various training sessions held over the past two weeks. We are very fortunate to have many high-level coaches in place including 12 College staff members to ensure we give our boys the best coaching possible. I will attest that our squad is receiving an excellent standard of coaching.
The first AIC Track and Field meet for the season was held last week and next meet will be held on Thursday 8 September at SAF. We ask all rugby league, basketball and tennis players to give Track & Field their highest priority and ensure they attend both these meets. A full program including event times as well as the bus departure and arrival times will be posted on the AIC Track and Field section within the website. Students who are listed in the AIC Track & Field squad are expected to attend all training sessions and meets. If for any reason students are unable to attend, they are to contact their coach directly please.
Please refer to the Parent Lounge and Student Café portals to view a full list of students required to attend the weekly training sessions for Track and Field. All boys are to give this meet their highest priority over any other sporting commitment.
AIC Basketball – Mr Sean O’Neill, AIC Basketball Coordinator
Round 4 against St Patrick’s was another excellent round of basketball for Villanova. We finished with 27 wins and four losses and again showcased how strong our program is. The Junior College continued their undefeated run of form and shows that our future basketball program is in good hands.
The 1st V game was an absolute nail biter. St Patrick’s certainly made the most of some early dominance and stretched the lead to 18 points during the first quarter. They played a tough brand of basketball and certainly shocked our players with their intensity. However, our players regrouped and ensured the lead did not blow out anymore. St Patrick’s continued to hold a 15-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter that slowly got whittled down until we were drawing with two minutes to play. The calm and collected players finished the game out strongly to win by nine but was a timely reminder that we need to be out our best for every game.
This weekend we are against our strong rivals St Laurence’s who have equally been going very well so far this season. Hopefully out commitment to training will again showcase our skills. Good luck to all!

AIC Tennis – Mr Todd Kropp, AIC Tennis Coordinator
After a much-enjoyed long weekend, the Villanova tennis teams took to the training courts again this week in preparation for our Round 4 clash with a formidable St Patricks College. I’m glad to say we have posted some very positive results. For some teams, the weekend was most definitely a challenge it was refreshing to see the Villa boys playing each rally until the end fuelled by the support they received from the rest of their teammates.
I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our First IV team who recorded an 8 – 0 win against a very well-trained St Patrick’s. This is particularly special knowing the Villanova boys have been improving each round since the trials showing their growth on the court in both skill and mindset. Sometimes it is easy to underestimate your opponent and become complacent, but it was good to see this wasn’t the case.
There is certainly no rest for our teams as we come up against another tough opponent in St Laurence’s College. We are glad to welcome back our Year 5 – 8 teams to finally compete in a fixture on ‘home’ turf after being on the road for many rounds.
I wish best of luck to all teams!

AIC Rugby League – Mr Blake McLauchlan, AIC Rugby League Coordinator
Congratulations to all our rugby league teams on Round 4 against St Patrick’s College. Villanova put on an impressive performance coming away from Shorncliffe with four wins, one loss and two draws. It was great to see all teams scoring points with some impressive attacking combinations.
The 1st XIII had their first win for the season. The boys demonstrated that they could score quality points, crossing over for two early tries through the middle of the ruck and spreading it wide at speed to score in the corners. St Patrick’s were able to quickly capitalise on a few opportunities handed to them with a quick try at the start of the second half. There is no doubt that our 1st XIII have improved each week and I commend them for staying in control of the match, even after being reduced to 11 players with eight minutes left of the game. I urge the 1st XIII to remain positive and composed as they look towards Round 5. The team demonstrated that they have what it takes to be victorious over SLC, SEC and Padua in the coming weeks.
This weekend we take on St Laurence’s College out at Ipswich. Please check the draw posted on the website for the time and the field that teams have been allocated to. Please allow enough travel time to ensure you arrive at Ipswich at least 30 minutes before your scheduled kick off time unless you have been told to arrive earlier by your coach.
I challenge our boys to bring a positive mindset to the game and back themselves. There is always a great rivalry between us and St Laurence’s and the ‘black and gold’ can be a difficult task to conquer at times. I urge all players to train hard this week and ensure their hard work filters through to the game.
I would like to remind all parents that they are not to approach a coach, referee, QRL representative or any member of the opposing school. If there are any issues or concerns that parents may have regarding rugby league, they should be directed to the Rugby League Coordinator or Director of Sport.
Finally, please ensure that if you are absent from training that you contact your coach prior to training so that the coaches can plan effectively and get the most out of the training sessions. Coaches contact details can be found on the AIC Rugby League Season Schedule which is located in the AIC Rugby League section of the Locker Room.
I wish all teams the best of luck for this weekend. Play within the spirit of the game and as always, chase the win!

Villanova Swimming
Please be advised that the Villanova College swim program will commence in two weeks for those students who are currently in Year 5 – 11 (that is, our 2022 AIC Swimmers). All new students to the College in 2023 are invited to commence their training Week 1, Term 4 as per days and times listed below.
The annual AIC Swimming Championship will be held in Week 7 of Term 1, 2023. For Villanova College to be competitive and to do well, we urge all current students and those who will be commencing their education at the College in 2023 to commence swimming training NOW.
Training will commence for all current students on Tuesday 6 September 2022 and will continue every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning throughout the entire season. For those students who are commencing at Villanova in Years 5 and 7 in 2023, training will commence in Week 1, Term 4 2022 (on Tuesday 4 October) as per the schedule below. These sessions will run up to and include Friday 16 December 2022. The program will recommence on Tuesday 3 January 2023 and will run until the end of Week 1, Term 1, 2023 at which time selection trials will be held. Further information regarding these trials will be provided next year.
While the College appreciates that some students may choose to continue their pre-season training elsewhere, we would encourage all swimmers to consider joining the College’s program. All students who are interested in joining Villanova’s swim team will be required to attend trials in Week 1, 2023. Participation or non-participation in our pre-season schedule will not guarantee a place in our final squad. However, we do believe it will strengthen your chance to do well at the trials and aid in building a strong College swimming culture.
All training sessions will be held at Langlands Park Memorial Pool, located at 5 Panitya Street, Stones Corner, and will be under the direction of Mr Felipe Barraza Rojas – Villanova Swim Coach (Year 9 – 12) and Ms Kerry Holland – Villanova Swim Coach (Year 5 – 8).
Training is open to all students who hope to become a member of Villanova’s 2023 swim team or for students wishing to increase their physical fitness. Please note that these sessions are for students who are capable swimmers only, they are not ‘learn to swim’ sessions. Parents who are looking for ‘learn to swim’ sessions may wish to enrol their son/s in an alternate program run at Langlands Pool.

Students are then entitled to attend as many training sessions as possible throughout this period. Altogether, those who join the program could have access up to 50 training sessions throughout this period at a cost of only $200 (this is $4 per session by highly skilled and qualified swim coaches). The more sessions you attend the more value for money you receive. This represents outstanding value.
Kerry Holland has asked all members of the Jets Swim Club to participate in at least one of the Villanova squad sessions each week. These additional sessions will help build team spirit and provide further skills training for Met East squads, and relay practice.
For those wishing to enroll in the swim program, please click the link below to register your details online. Information regarding payment can also be found within this link. Please understand that the personal details and emergency contact information provided within the registration form will be shared with the staff from Langlands Pool.
