Responding to past abuse

Villanova College acknowledges the past abuse of students in our care.

We express our profound sorrow and deep regret for what they and their families have endured. We recognise that we are powerless to undo the past, but can work towards providing some healing to lives damaged by abuse.

The College acknowledges that victims and survivors of abuse may not wish to deal directly with the College.

The College advocates strongly that if you believe you were a survivor of, our witness to, any institutional abuse during your time at Villanova College, to contact the police directly. To contact the police in Queensland, call 131 444.

If you are having trouble deciding whether or not to report sexual abuse, a free service may help. Ethi-Call is a confidential ethics counselling service offered by St James Ethics Centre – an independent organisation with no religious or political affiliations. Click here to find out more.

In conjunction with the Order of St Augustine, the College has joined the National Redress Scheme. We maintain our support for the work undertaken by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse which brought into focus the harm done at some institutions including the Catholic Church. There are now processes and support systems in place for those who were abused, such as the National Redress Scheme provided by the Australian Government.

Stopline ‘Whistleblower’ Service

Villanova College is committed to fostering a culture where people are encouraged to raise concerns and can do so safely. It’s safe to speak up!

Villanova College strongly encourages anyone who suspects unethical or illegal behaviour by Villanova College staff to report the matter directly to STOPLINE.

STOPLINE is an independent commercial ‘whistleblower’ service that receives confidential information and reports about suspected abuse, serious misconduct and policy breaches by Augustinian personnel. It is an online disclosure service for use by employees, the religious, volunteers, parishioners, parents and other members of the public.

Information can be forwarded to STOPLINE by accessing www.osa.stoplinereport.com
Your report may remain anonymous if you wish. You may also elect to provide all your contact details. Alternatively, you can provide STOPLINE with your contact information but not allow STOPLINE to provide that information to the Augustinians.

A child safe organisation consciously and systematically:

Places emphasis on genuine engagement with and valuing of children.

Creates conditions that reduce the likelihood of harm to children and young people.

Creates conditions that increase the likelihood of identifying harm.

Responds to any concerns, disclosures, allegations of suspicions of harm.

In support of this commitment, policies, procedures and training are in place at Villanova College to effectively address the safety and wellbeing of students in our care.
