Director of Sport Address
Villa Park was a hive of activity on Saturday 25 March with our first trial round for Football and Rugby. With over 800 students participating in games and internal trials, there was a great sense of friendship and community around the fields.
This was evident at the barbecue and Canteen with over thirty parent volunteers signing up online to register their assistance on the day. The Sports Club would like to thank all of those volunteers who helped make the day such a success and parents are encouraged to continue this support through our home rounds in Term 2.
Our Chess program also commenced on Friday 24 March with trial rounds versus St Laurence’s College. It was pleasing to see so many Villa students attend the Chess trials as this will provide great depth to our teams for the AIC season in Term 2.
Congratulations to Mr Pascoe and our First XVIII AFL team who finished third in the AIC Open competition. This caps of a stellar term for our Villanova sporting teams, please see below finalised results for all Term 1 sports.

Sports Club – parent volunteers
A reminder that the Villanova Sports Club run the barbecue/Canteen at Villa Park on Saturdays. If any parents have some spare time on game days to lend a hand, perhaps during your son’s warm-up or post-game, that would be very much appreciated. Revenue raised from our canteens goes directly towards the development of our Sports programs. Thank you in advance for your assistance, it is very much appreciated.
The next trial round at Villa Park is Saturday 22 April versus Iona. Our Years 5-8 Football and Rugby teams will be playing at home. Information on how to register your assistance will be provided online and, in the draw, posted in Week 1, Term 2.
Communications
Families are reminded to access all Sport information via the Villanova College website and the Villanova College App. The Locker Room tab provides updated information regarding training schedules and current AIC/trial draws.
The AIC Draw 2023 can also be accessed here. A note that in some cases, draws may not match the AIC draw (for example this is the case in AFL). Families are encouraged to always check The Locker Room for accurate draws. Weekly Team Lists will be posted regularly to the Parent Lounge and Student Cafe Portals.

Cross-Country
The cross-country training for the ‘Running Wildcats’ has had a very positive start for those runners who have been training. I strongly encourage each member of the squad to continue training through the Easter holidays to maintain the fitness developed through some outstanding training during the latter stages of Term 1.
The AIC Cross-Country Championships are scheduled for Wednesday 31May, at St Patrick’s College sporting fields, Curlew Park, Sandgate, so the time to prepare is now.
There have been a number of students who have uploaded the Strava app. I encourage further members of the cross-country squad to download the free app and join the club. Although, the Strava app works better on fitness trackers and smart watches it is also very effective with any smart phone. However, you will need to carry your phone (arm brace preferable) when running to get maximum benefit from the app.
Strava is a free digital service accessible through both mobile applications and the web. Many students have been uploading runs regularly, following other athletes, giving them kudos and comments, joining clubs and challenges. It is a closed club so to join the squad on Strava please join Strava and request access to the:

Please email any of the coaches if you require further clarification about the Cross-Country holiday training program. We look forward to having each runner in the team, become the best runner he can be. Dedication to training especially when no one is watching, is a key habit that enable a team, and an individual, to grow in character.
Mr Brian Pascoe, Cross-Country Coordinator
Football
It was exciting to arrive at Villa Park last Saturday to witness the Villanova community officially “kicking off” the Football (and Rugby) season for 2023.
Our First XI squad hosted our perennial rivals St Laurence’s College. Despite losing 3-2 it was a very pleasing result and also an entertaining game to watch. Sixteen players had the opportunity to play a part and showcase their talents. Every player put in a solid performance. Being only our second trial we showed a lot of promise and with some hard work at training we can once again challenge for premiership honours.
Our next trial game is Thursday afternoon 30 March at Villa Park against BSHS. This will be another opportunity for players to impress leading into our two-day holiday camp at Villa Park.
For those students interested in some further training over the holidays, please see link attached for the Capalaba Bulldogs Holiday Camp,
Capalaba Bulldogs Holiday Camp – April 2023
Mr Tom Carnavas, First XI Head Coach
Rugby
The Andrew Slack squad had their first hit out of the year with trials against St Laurence’s First & Second XV . It was an exciting day for all the squad, who had started training way back in term three in 2022.
We played two very hard fought games, with our Seconds playing outstanding rugby and coming home comfortable winners, while the 1st XV won 5 tries to 3 in the dying seconds of the game with a spectacular try to Hugo Harrison.
Next week we turn our attention to our trial against Churchie at Villa Park on Saturday Morning, followed by our four day camp at the Sunshine Coast Recreational Centre in the first week of the school holidays.
Congratulations to all our Villa Rugby boys who internally trialled on Saturday, we look forward to you all having a successful season ahead and a big shoutout to our 10A & 9A’s who were also victorious against St Laurence’s and St James respectively on the weekend.
Easter holiday rugby clinics are being run at Villa Park for students in Year 5-8 during the first week. Please refer to the flyer below to register your interest. Limited spots are available, so register early.
